The 2013 Region III Championships were held in Edmond, OK this year, a suburb of Oklahoma City that is near Moore, OK. As most of you know, Moore, OK was struck by a massive tornado on May 20th. The organizers of the Region III Championships challenged participating teams to raise funds to support the relief effort. Once the NCA 98 Boys team earned a spot in the tournament, they decided to go the extra mile and actually give back to the Oklahoma City community by volunteering in the relief effort.
The team contacted the volunteer coordinator for 1st United Methodist Church in Moore, which is coordinating much of the relief effort, and asked to be assigned as a work crew the morning of the team’s rest day. The team was paired with a work crew (coincidentally from Fairview United Methodist Church from the High Point / Trinity area of North Carolina) and assigned the job of moving debris from a lot to the curb. When we arrived on site, we saw that this job was essentially moving a house to the curb. The demolition of the house had been completed and the slab had been cleared. However, the “house” – walls, roofing, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, etc. - was still all around the pad. Working together, the two crews carried the debris to the curb where it could be picked up by the city trucks and taken to the landfill. The effort took about 3 hours.
The NCA 98 Boys had strong participation in this service project. Those who could not participate in the work effort due to injury worked at the church assembling wheel barrows and other tools for use by the work crews. Those who could not participate in the work effort due to travel donated money to the relief effort. 100% of the donated money will be used by UMCOR for the relief effort.
In attendance were players Logan Griffin, Jacob Kendall, Christopher Wallace, Tomas Zygmuntowicz, and their parents. And we would all like to thank Bob Wallace for pulling together this volunteer opportunity for us.
